where is 'crop' in the menu?

In the toolbar of RealWorld Photos.

There is an alternative way to crop using Transform tool. After selecting a region with it, right-click and select Crop from context menu.

Where is the Apply command?

The crop tools is the scissors shaped button on the left side of the toolbar.
To apply it just press enter on keyboard.

click on the picture first it will go gray then click the scissor button, left click mouse and hold and drag on the picture the box will start to form.
for mistakes just click picture again it will go gray, then left click mouse and drag box will appear again.

Is there a way to do a free-form selection to cut or crop, like you can in Microsoft Paint, or does it only allow you to crop a rectangular shape?

You'll probably want to use the "Lasso selection" or "Shape selection" tools. Though, they are not for cropping. You must copy the selected region to clipboard and then paste it as a new image or alternatively invert the selection and press Delete key to delete the (previously unselected) region and finally use the "Remove empty border" command.

Would like Crop tool to crop all frames of an animation, but it only crops the currently-selected frame.
