please help me

user iconVlasta on October 14th 2005 0

I have checked your site and the favicon is showing without problems in both IE and Firefox on my computer. Did you try all the hints given above? Especially adding the page to favorites and clearing IE cache before.

user iconAnonymous on October 16th 2005 0

Hi,

  I have performed all the steps regarding the FAVICON to be displayed in the IE. But it is not getting displayed.
user iconVlasta on October 16th 2005 0

Well, your web site is OK, the problem is with your computer. Here are some more extreme recommendations: change your default browser to IE, delete all bookmarks to your site, clear IE cache, history folder, and recycle bin, restart computer, bookmark your page and then click a few times on the bookmark.

user iconAnonymous on November 1st 2005 0

This Favicon things is quite silly on internet explorer.

One thing you can do, if you want the icon to be visible in your explorer, do like you do when you make a shortcut to a page on you desktop but drag the URL (or rather the little e-icon nex to the adress) to the internet explorer window itself so that it reloads the page.

Do that twice.

Suddenly the icon is visible.

Reloading alone does not cut it.

Considering that it was internet explorer that came up with this thing with an icon its really super-silly that it works fantasticly on Firefox...

user iconAnonymous on November 19th 2005 0

thanks so much

user iconAnonymous on November 26th 2005 0

Favicon can also be used in the latest Firefox to display a .gif file and hence a moving icon!

make sure you put in two of the favicon generators as follows:
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon2.ICO">
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon.gif">
IE selects the .ico file and firefox displays the moving.gif!

Your favicon is a renamed BMP. While Firefox understands it, IE requires a real Windows icon.

user iconAnonymous on December 23rd 2005 0

I can not get the link to work on my site and I do use Mozilla Firefox. I tried using an ico file and a gif file. I changed the href different ways and it still does not work. Could it be that the server that hosts my site needs to allow one to use this feature? This does not make sense to me, but I can't imagine what I could possibly be doing wrong. The java script console just gives me my css errors. Thanks!

user icontpkyteroo on January 30th 2006 0

I got it to work by using the gif file with the full url address to the image. I realized that I tried the full url address with the ico file instead of the gif file. Either my host does not support ico files, or the program I used does not allow ico files to actually work in a trial version.

Thanks!!!!

Hi, I added this text on my html page.. but IE7 still doesn't show the favicon.ico.

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />

I'm running this locally,
I'm using apache 2.0 and PHP 4.4.2

Works great in Mozilla Firefox, Opera 8.54, Netscape 8.0.4. I also did all the things that you said.

Please help.. Thanks.

user iconVlasta on May 8th 2006 0

Try using absolute path. For IE6, the icon should be in the webserver root (http://localhost/favicon.ico). Also, it could be incorrect icon format.

Thanks for your suggestions on the installation of Favicon.
However, I tried all your fixes for IE and after much aggrevation I got the icon for your site and for my site to show both in the address line and in the bookmarks for IE v6. However, as soon as I close the IE browser and open it again I lose my icon, AND the favicon for your site in both the address line and the bookmarks.
Firefox, opera, and Netscape all took the favicon just fine.

For who can't display favicon on IE.
Try this:
Go to tools> internet options> advanced> navigation> activate personalized "favorite" menu.
I've tried this and it's working good now.
But still I have to add the page to favorites to display the favicon.
Good luck.

user iconkathiek on July 11th 2006 0

I have successfully posted a favicon at www.firstnemo.org - is there a way for it to show up in the Title bar at the top of the browser (and not just in the URL address bar)? I tried to add an image tag as part of the title but that didn't work.

user iconVlasta on July 11th 2006 0

AFAIK it is not possible with current browsers.

user iconMrBernard on July 17th 2006 0

It seems to me that IE 6 only adds favicon for bookmarked pages. So if your site is dynamic then one would have to add bookmarks for all pages... You can easily test this with for instance Wikipedia. Firefox works like a dream...

user iconAnonymous on August 2nd 2006 0

mine shows up in my favorites.. it has both the 16x16 and a 32x32 in the ico file... shows in fav list and when browsing the fav folder it shows the big one... but does not show in the address bar... winxp, ie6

user iconAnonymous on October 4th 2006 0

To get this to work with IE 6, make sure a 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 in the ico file. I tried all kinds of tricks to get it to show, but that was the only thing that worked.

user iconAnonymous on October 10th 2006 0

I think if i can dispaly that icon in the browser, then it works in the address bar. So please help me what should i do to display that icon in the browser

user iconVlasta on October 17th 2006 0

Your favicon is a PNG image, not a real icon. While Firefox accepts any image format, you need a proper .ico file for IE.

user iconVlasta on October 28th 2006 0

The first version is correct. If you want your favicon to be shown in IE6, it must be in the root of your site and called exactly favicon.ico

user iconDave on October 29th 2006 0

Thank you for responding Vlasta but it is still not working, <link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/favicon.ico"> I have it 16x16 the correct code, not sure what to do from here, any suggestions?

user iconVlasta on October 29th 2006 0

You should use absolute path - that is including the leading slash. And you should place it to the root directory, not to any subdirectory. Otherwise it would not work with IE6. Other than that, I would suggest to read the previous comments.

user iconSeattleRetro on November 10th 2006 0

Just want to say thanks for your site--I was able to get the icon working for IE6 finally.
For those who have Photoshop, there was a free plug-in to do .ico files. I used the 16x16 size.
And I notice here on this site you used a relative (vs. absolute) placement for your .ico file--and sure enough, it shows in Firefox, but not in IE6!

user iconmanzanofab on November 20th 2006 0

user iconVlasta on November 21st 2006 0

Favicon should (and in case of IE must) be an .ico file. It is not enough to rename a .jpg to .ico.

I find it actually takes two lines in the page headers to make a favicon work well across all browsers:

Wheatworks, I added your extra tag, but IE 6 still continues to ignore my favicon. Any other workarounds exist for IE?

user iconVlasta on December 30th 2006 0

The two lines are not necessary unless you want to use different favicons in IE and Firefox. The rel="icon" line is ignored by IE and only affects Firefox.
If you are having problems in IE6, check you page from another computer. It is usually only a caching issue.

user iconVlasta on January 30th 2007 0

The problem is in your favicon.ico file - it is a renamed gif image and IE requires a real .ico format.

user iconparadox on January 30th 2007 0

Thank you so much, I appreciate it. I apologize for the triple comment post, I didn't realize a refresh was re-posting.

Again, bless you for the answer. Thank you.

user iconparadox on January 30th 2007 0

I am not really sure what a "real" ico format is, other than re-naming it. Photoshop doesn't recognize ico files, and I could only work with the jpg that was given to me.

Okay, unclear on the concept, it's not exactly a new experience for me in this life. Go to those sites that generate this ico file for you, since you can't do it. I did. I replaced it on the server twice and it still won't show in IE.

In interviewing for a Manager job so I can flee IE. It's not worth it in this life. Anything further you can suggest, thank you very much, I'm not stressing. It's a bona fide ico on the root, still klunks.

user iconVlasta on January 30th 2007 0

I have checked the site from IE6 and it seems to work fine. It is probably just a caching issue on your computer.

user iconVlasta on January 31st 2007 0

Sharan: you should add the <link ... - it does not maater what technology you use on the server. And for IE6 susers must add the page to favorites, for other browsers, the icon shows just by visiting the page.

Patricia: Your favicon works in IE7, it just takes a more time to display, because there is relatively lot of data on your page.

user iconHardHead on February 15th 2007 0

I have one question..How can I use this on a php site that has no html intro?

user iconHardHead on February 15th 2007 0

Sonny Tee I see the Icon just fine on your site. Looks Good

user iconVlasta on February 15th 2007 0

There should be no problem with php. Php, like all similar technologies, just produce html code. But, of course, you have to find the right place in the script you are using.

user iconHardHead on February 15th 2007 0

LOL yea so I see but everything I have tried hasnt worked.. But I'll keep trying

user iconAnonymous on February 20th 2007 0

firefox used to display favicons just fine until the latest version (2.0.0.1) - then they showed up from other sites, but not mine, until I added the "shortcut icon" tag in the headers. Strange, because firefox never needed that before as long as favicon.ico was in the root web directory.

user iconAnonymous on February 22nd 2007 0

I have tried everything I know to put this on php but nothing works Help!!!!!!!!

user iconAnonymous on February 23rd 2007 0

same problem as with sonny.tee...........

Mozilla Firefox n all those "good" browsers work great in showing the icons.....but IE7 juzz blatantly refuses to show it.......

all others find the icons even if I place it in subfolders n give the appropriate path..........

user iconAnonymous on February 24th 2007 0

Got it to work fine. THANKS !!!

user iconAnonymous on February 26th 2007 0

How do you integrate this with Wordpress (the platform, not the .com)?

user iconAnonymous on February 26th 2007 0

how i can see my favicon?

user iconAnonymous on March 11th 2007 0

I can not even see the favicons of Microsoft, Google, etc...
Can anybody suggest anything? Maybe in the security settings of ie?...

user iconCurious on March 12th 2007 0

I had have problem in displaying favicon on IE7 using all the tips mentioned online. Finally, I realise it works only by adding <body> .. </body> in my test page. I have a bad habit to ignore these tags.

OK, I think I done it, the file although on my pc is 16 x 16 , for some reason it was showing as 48 x 48 on the server... I removed it all and tried again, seemed to have sorted the problem for now, I also think it only lets a genuine ico file work better than a transformed gif or jpeg

I tried to put favicon icon on one site but it doesn't work. I tried everything and I don't know where I'm wrong!?! The site url is http://www.inet.hr/~vjezic
I've placed icon file in the root folder.

user iconVlasta on April 3rd 2007 0

No, you icon is not in root folder, but actually in /~vjezic folder. I know that for you it seems to be a root folder, but for browsers, it is not, the root folder would be http://www.inet.hr/

Your favicon is a renamed .gif. You need a real icon for IE.

user iconAnonymous on April 11th 2007 0

Urm....this is embarrassing !!!!!!!!!
I just commissioned a script so viewers can go to:-
http://www.favicon.co.uk and make a favicon.ico file from
any image that they have on their computer
The script is supposed to convert the image they supply
into a favicon.ico file
In early stage of design BUT http://www.favicon.co.uk/new.html
has the necessary code and the favicon.ico file is uploaded
but....guess what...I can't see it in my favourites
I tried all the advice offered by Googling "favicon don't show"
and from this page...to no avail
Any further advice appreciated.
Secondly can somebody try the script and let me know if it works
for them (after uploading and bookmarking to your own site)
You could mail me stay[at]canastahotel.com
Thanks in advance for any useful comments

user iconAnonymous on April 11th 2007 0

Problem fixed - it was actually a problem with the script and the way it formatted the favicon.ico image - now corrected.
If anybody wants to try it out please go to: http://www.favicon.co.uk
to design your own favicon.ico file

user iconWillowsHeart on May 5th 2007 0

Hi I'm hoping you can help as I'm rather perplexed! I created a favicon, uploaded it to my root folder, inserted the link into my main index page (as in example on this page) but the icon is only showing against my 'forum' page and not the others. I can't work out why it's showing on that one page when it's not even the page I inserted the link. I'm getting really frustrated now so any help will be greatly appreciated ๐Ÿ˜Š Thanks

user iconVlasta on May 5th 2007 0

It depends on the browser you are using. Sometimes it is enough to have favicon.ico in root folder for the icon to appear, sometimes the browser does not fetch the icon, because it already has the default one cached for that page.

user iconWillowsHeart on May 5th 2007 0

I cleared my cache and hey presto its working . . thanks for your help ๐Ÿ˜Š

user iconmjarx on June 15th 2007 0

Icon was being displayed, now it's not. Any tips?

user iconVlasta on June 15th 2007 0

If you did not change anything then probably the cached icon on your computer was updated or dropped. Re-add it to your favorites if your are using IE6.

user iconAnonymous on June 25th 2007 0

Hi, www.eyeonbooks.com.au seems to work in FF but not in IE7? Can you please have a look?

user iconVlasta on June 25th 2007 0

Works OK in my IE7, it will be just caching issue on your computer.

user iconShohreh on July 9th 2007 0

I cannot get the fav icon to show up on Internet Explorer. Please check my site http://www.egoldfilledjewelry.com and tell me what I am doing wrong.

user iconVlasta on July 9th 2007 0

Looks OK from here, probably just not updated cache on your computer. But you should remove the 32x32 pixel format from your favicon or at least make it similar to the 16x16 format.

user iconAnonymous on July 10th 2007 0

Yes, to the top level page, that defines the frames.

user iconChris L on July 11th 2007 0

user iconVlasta on July 11th 2007 0

That page seems to redirect to geocities. That will be a problem for IE6, because you cannot put the icon to the root folder of a site.

woops would be good to give you the web address - http://www.zesthealthcare.com.au

user iconVlasta on July 16th 2007 0

user iconAnonymous on July 19th 2007 0

enjoying your site...i already had the "<link rel..." already in place with the addition of "type="image/x-icon". As soon as i copied my newly made icon out there it worked great in firefox. no luck in IE 6 or 7 yet despite deleting cached information and favorites. the site is www.navini.com

user iconVlasta on July 19th 2007 0

... no problems in my IE7

user iconAnonymous on July 19th 2007 0

just an interesting note, i changed the file name and code from favicon.ico to navini.ico and it worked immediately in IE7. something was evidently cached somewhere. in any case, if i learn anything fun i'll share it.

user iconAnonymous on July 23rd 2007 0

Good call on the renaming the icon, that worked for me too and is a tip that's probably worth adding to the list above.

user iconjfairbanks on July 24th 2007 0

Downloaded trial version but all the favicons I tried to create ended up 25k. Used the online version & it worked great (<2k). Found advice true: Comes up great in Mozilla; a struggle to get it to come up in IEv6 or v7.

user iconVlasta on August 9th 2007 0

The online tool is good for favicons, the normal editor gives more freedom (you can for example create favicons with transparency and smooth edges). You should delete all but 16x16 images when using it for favicons.

user iconAnonymous on August 9th 2007 0

Last week I was tasked to "freshen up" my company's Web site. I thought this would be a great chance to learn how to put an
icon next to the address bar--something I'd wanted to do for my personal site for ages. So I checked out a few sites like this
one and soon had my company logo into a favicon file and the relevant code in the index file. I didn't want a lone graphic floating about in the root directory so put the .ico file in /graphics and added that path to the href. Worked beautifully in Opera 9.24 (my browser of choice) right off. Then I tried it in IE6. Didn't work. Firefox 1 (I keep it for testing new scripts!)--no problem. A search on "favicon in IE6" brought me here.
Now I can't be experimenting with my live company site so I switched to my personal one, which is hosted on GeoCities. I got the same result as above. First I tried moving the favicon file into the same directory as the index (and edited the href). Still no good for IE6. Then I tried everything suggested above--including the reboot! I found the source in Vlasta's site (I warmed my nose before sniffing
around!) and copied the link rel line from there. Still no good for IE6, and I agree with milongal, the "/" stopped it from working
in Opera and Firefox. The "type" (with "image/x-icon" or "image/vnd.microsoft.icon" recomended by Wikipedia) didn't help.
Then I noticed something weird in Opera and Firefox. Even though my icon shows up next to the address bar, when I bookmark my site, the icon appearing in Bookmarks is totally different to mine and nothing I recognise! Is this is because I'm on a hosted site--GeoCities are forcing an arbitrary icon of their choice on my bookmark? I checked a few other sites and all the ones that look the same next to the address bar and in bookmarks appear to have their own servers (or at least domain names) and use the simplest form of the "link" declaration.
I'm stuck and have given up for now. I've now spent more than 10 times the amount of time trying to get this to work in IE6 than it took to do in the first place! My boss and just about everyone else in my company are IE devotees so I guess no-one's going to see my work!
Sorry this has gone on too long--any helpful advice on my comments would be welcome!

A solution I found was to add in the ref link the whole url address with a question mark at the end, that will tell the server to look for any change in the file everytime your page loads, that worked for me, good luck!!

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="www.website.com/favicon.ico?">

user iconAnonymous on November 16th 2007 0

I found that I had to rename my favicon to favicon1, change the code to say <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon1.ico">. That was the only way I could get it to work.

user iconAnonymous on November 16th 2007 0

Clearing the cache, deleting history, removing cookies, restarting IE7 - none of it worked.

What DID work was adding the question mark, as the UA post of 11/11/07 suggests. Works like a charm!

Looks OK from here in IE7. But you may want to change the mime type of the favicon from your current text/plain to image/x-icon.

Hi There

I have tried everything to make my fav icon come up on IE 6. But no luck. I have provided a hard coded path to the icon file in my Header control, added as bookmark etc after clearing previous bookmarks, Temp files etc but no luck. I noticed that when I browse to my icon file through IE and look at its properties - it shows Type: "Not Available". Is this causing the issue? Why is that? When I go to the icon file through file structure on the server and go properties - it shows it as a 16x16 .ico file. Please help. Thanks. Jatin

user iconVlasta on April 21st 2008 0

experttitsolutions.biz seems to be offline. As for the IE6 problem, make sure, the favicon.ico is really an .ico file, not just renamed .bmp, it is in the root folder and called exactly favicon.ico. You may aslo check it mime type if it is not something weird. With IE6, it is often a cache issue, try a clean computer, add your page to favorites and click it.

Mozilla shows perfectly Explorer Not at all. I have 3 hours into it. I used http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/validator/ and it says it is all working. When I looked on my Temporary internet files my favicon was downloaded at one time because I can saw it and I have been erasing my temp files every hour to make sure it is not full. Also I have set explorer to redownload every time it visits a page. When I deleted my favicon from my temp files and went back to the temp files 30 minutes later it did not show it in my temp folder.

I'm overly puzzled

You said: "Make sure, the icon file is called favicon.ico and it is placed in the root folder of your web server."

I tried and tried and tried and couldn't get it to work. I moved the file to my /images folder and made the path correction in the code and it worked perfectly.

So in my case, it could NOT be in the root folder. Hope that helps.

user iconAnonymous on June 10th 2008 0

IE 7 supports favicons, and all you need to do is make sure that your image is 16 x 16 pixels; save as favicon.ico, and upload to server. Hope that helps!

Do you actually need a published Web Site? I'm just trying to test it on my PC locally (XP SP2) and have simply setup a folder the sample html (index.html) and a favicon.ico file. I also have a sub-solder /images with the favicon in it, but neither work.

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="../favicon.ico">
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico">
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">

and now it works in IE as well as Firefox.

This is driving me mad! My IE6 Favorites (yes I have tried deleting and re-adding) ALL show with the standard IE icon. The only thing I haven't tried is rebooting (XP Home)

I'm sure it usen't to be like this and have slight suspicions of the beta Chrome (which seems to have affected some Firefox settings).

Icons work fine on Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

I am trying to add a favicon to a website that is on a webserver with an html folder that holds all of the webpages. The pages are created in Microsoft Frontbage. I have saved my favicon to the html folder. Is there something else I need to do since I am not actually writing html code for my website?

user iconAnonymous on September 19th 2008 0

I have been trying to add a favicon to IE6 for longer than I care to mention. I have read NUMEROUS articles and have taken everyone's advice. I also followed the instructions on MSDN and have not yet found anything telling me how to get this to work. I cannot force people to add my page to their favorites just to see my icon. Yes, I cleared my cache, favorites, offline pages, closed IE and restarted and refreshed. I have played with MULTIPLE versions of the <LINK ...> statement and it still doesn't work. If anyone has successfully gotten this to work, without putting the full URL in the link statement (I need it dynamic so I can develop on LOCALHOST before moving to a server), I would like to hear how you did it, and I would like to see it to prove you did it (I'm a skeptic and need proof). Everything I've read says it should be working, yet it's not. No one has offered the proof by giving me a URL to look at (with the favicon in the address line) with the exact code used and instructions to get it to work. If you are just going to give me your advice, please don't respond to this, I've heard it all. I'm looking for a solution (with proof) that works all the time.

user iconAnonymous on September 30th 2008 0

@ The Coming Wave
Tried this, and yet it still does not work in IE7 or IE6 (could care less about 6 though)

It makes little or no sense. What annoys me even more so is that I made another website and the favicon appears flawlessly there, yet it only gives me trouble with the new site I am working on.

Perhaps it takes IE longer to figure out that it needs to display a favicon? IE takes forever to render plain HTML and run Javascript, so...

It's still not working for me. However, I think there may be a problem with my .ico file. It shows as a broken link in IE when I pull it up by itself.

I hav done all the above thing for ie but still unsuccessful.Same thing in firefox is working fine. I doubt if any set up in hosting server has to be done.

user iconAnonymous on January 16th 2009 0

I tried locally but it didn't worked just tin Firefox and Opera. After I have put it up it worked in IE as well.

The problems in IE are a lot about browser cache refresh. IE has made it very complicated and obscure.

That is the caching effect in action. Clearing your cache would work as well. I would still recommend to at least keep the favicon.ico file on the server.

My favicon shows up on all of my pages except one: the index.html page. The favicon is listed in my root directory as favcon.ico. It shows just fine on both IE and FireFox - except for the index page.

I have a paid site and use Cpanel's html editor. My favicon was created with a favicon program, is 16x16 and is named favicon.ico

I've cleared the bookamark, cache, history, and cookies a dozen times and it still won't show up on the index page - but shows up fine on the other four pages. :/

I have two other websites and those favicons show up fine on all the pages (including the index pages) using the same process and coding. What could the problem on this one page be??????? Why does it not show on this one sites index.html page?

The code is am using:

<head>
<title>...</title>
<meta name="..." />
<meta name="keywords" content="..." />
<meta name="Author" content="..." />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/favicon.ico" />

Any suggestions to get this darn thing to work on this one page would be appreciated.

Sorry, but I don't feel like registering.

Please check out the (draft) standard for "favicon" at the W3C site ("How to Add a Favicon to your Site"). The current HTML standard and XHTML standard are somewhat different from what things have been. Also note that since the standard itself is not actually a standard yet (it's in draft), things may change again (but I doubt the "link" tag will change much, if at all from what you see below), but it makes my description of this below a little complicated.

HTML:
<head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="http://example.com/myicon.png">

XHTML:
<head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/somewhere/myicon.png"/>

Note that the W3C states that the "profile" attribute and value as shown in the "head" tag should be added as shown for the purpose of properly defining the meaning "icon" value of the "rel" attribute. However, it is my opinion (professionally, I'm a computer programmer and a website designer/coder) that at this time the use of the "profile" attribute is completely superfluous. (I say this, because if you look at the profile that the W3C gives as an example, it seems to provide nothing at all in terms of giving information to a browser that the browser would use to know what to do. The one I'm seeing as I write this seems purely for human reading.)

In the "link" tags above, the "rel" attribute is simply "icon", not "shortcut icon". (In fact, the format of the value "shortcut icon" is bad - contrary to current standards - because it has a space in it, and in current standard the space is a delimiter, so "shortcut icon" would be referring to two different link types, one called "shortcut" and another one called "icon".)

The "type" and "href" attribute values are examples, but note that only the following three values are allowed values for "type" (corresponding to the MIME types of the allowed image formats of the icon file):

type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon"
type="image/gif"
type="image/png"

Note that previously "image/x-icon" was used, because it was an unregistered MIME type - unregistered, meaning that Microsoft had never registered that image file format type officially with the organization, IANA, where all MIME types are officially established. But that particular image format is now registered, so from now on you should use "image/vnd.microsoft.icon" for that type. (Note also that a lot of web server software does not have the new MIME type for ICO files configured, so they will ignore what you've specified anyway, and send it as "text/html" or "text/plain" - which is what they do for every type you specify for anything that the server is not configured to recognize as a valid MIME type.)

This means that you can now make the icon in either the up-until-now typical ICO format, or you can also make it either a GIF file or a PNG file. But remember that whatever format you choose to put the image file in, you must still comply with using a geometry of 16x16 or 32x32 pixels, and either an 8-bit or 24-bit color depth. (Obviously, if you make a GIF, then you can't have 24-bit color; however, a GIF file allows for animation if you want to use it.)

The reason I'm writing about this is because I just recently had occasion to want to use the "favicon" with a web site, which I've never done before, and googling around and digging up relevant information I've been studying this. (I also just updated the Wikipedia article on the subject, which is how I ended up here in fact from the link to this page that is at the bottom of the Wikipedia article.)

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
thanks

user iconBobD on January 11th 2010 0

I am having the same problem. My favicon works in Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, but not in IE8. I have tried all the suggestions here and nothing works.

Update: I resolved the problem, it was all to do with the favicon itself. I used a favicon generator from...http://www.favicongenerator.com/
It produced a favicon that did not work in IE. I then tried a favicon generator from....http://www.degraeve.com/favicon/index.php, and it produced favicons that actually worked in IE. I hope this helps all of you who are having IE favicon problems.

I could be wrong but you might have not successfully closed your line.

Try:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />

Instead of
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">

Cool, awesome simple trick for newbie like me, thanks alot.
At first it wasnt work but after i changed the path to "root/htdocs/img/favicon.ico" instead of "root/htdocs/favicon.ico"
and changed the code to
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/img/favicon" >

It Works, i cant see the diffrent with the original Tut but it work

user iconAnonymous on January 29th 2010 0

I am using a wysiwyg editor, and cannot 'mess' with html code. I can see my page code in Page Source inside wy editor itself and in Mozilla separately, but there is no option for copy/paste or edit. Is there any hope for this? It is the same thing with banners. I can use only custom made widgets provided by my hosting provider.

Hi, I am hoping someone might be able to help me on the following issues:

My website is www.clearlyorganizedlife.com.

1) In IE 8 I cannot get my favicon to show at all. UPDATE: SOLVED! Finally got it working - I erased the cookies and other temporary files. I think it was the cookies that were the problem.

2) In Foxfire, why does the favicon only look good in 2 of the 3 spots where it appears - it's okay on the tab, it's okay in the address bar, but doesn't look good in the bookmark. (It's jagged and not transparent.) UPDATE: SOLVED! Same issue as above - I deleted the cookies and other temporary files and now the browser is using the same version everywhere.

3) How can I get my favicon to look really crisp - like Yahoo's or Craig's list? What type of file do I need to begin with? I turned a 300 dpi jpg into a gif with 16 colors. I'm not a graphics designer, but know a little about Illustrator and Photoshop. STILL NEED HELP HERE....

Any help you can provide on these issues would be great. Thanks!!

user iconcdl on March 1st 2010 0

Hello TravellingInPink,

I see your problem in both FireFox 3.6 and Internet Explorer 8. ๐Ÿ˜ž

If you would like to see my favicon the address is >> http://cdl.viviti.com.

I started with an old preexisting 200 dpi file, normally I would bump up the resolution to 300-600 dpi, but the effort was intended merely to test the outcome.

Usually speaking, the higher the resolution (dpi/ppi) the better the image and the larger the file. My original file was a bitmap 246 x 246 pixels / 1.23 x 1.23 inches @ 200 dpi (222k), transparified & saved as portable network graphic (42.8 k), the resulting generated icon was 244k.

I used Paint Shop Pro 9.01 to produce the bitmap and portable network graphic, & @icon 1.21 (safely available through cnet download.com >> http://download.cnet.com/Icon-Sushi/3000-2195_4-10547564.html?tag=mncol;rbxcrdl1) to produce the icon. Aicon works well, is simple, & is freeware. All I did was open the .png in @icon 1.21 and saved it as a single icon.

It has been a while since I used the RealWorld Icon Editor (prior to version 2008.1), I loved using it when I did. In RealWorld Icon Editor you have the option to save as a smooth Windows XP icon or a Windows Vista icon (see >> http://www.rw-designer.com/vista-icon). There are other options which may assist you in achieving a smoother image in RealWorld Icon Editor.

When using RealWorld Icon Editor I would simply open the 200-300 dpi image and save in Windows XP or Windows Vista icons. If the image I was working with was too small the results would be a bit pixelated, I believe 512 x 512 is recommended.

You might also want to try to smooth out the edges of your original with shape based anti-aliasing and/or various blurring or smoothing adjustments/effects in PhotoShop. I haven't used PhotoShop yet but I hear that it is much the same as Paint Shop Pro.

If you are using RealWorld Icon Editor you may want to take a look at "Related resources: " here >> http://www.rw-designer.com/3D_icon_editor.php.

There is also a "free to try" convenient service online for rendering vector images >> http://vectormagic.com/home.

You may contact me via my website's navigation panel, http://cdl.viviti.com, if you need further assistance.

Good Luck!

user iconAnonymous on March 24th 2010 0

My favicon does not show up on the browsing tab in IE 8. It shows up fine in the favorites menu and on the toolbar. Nothing I have done to correct this (e.g. deleting history & cookies, resetting defaults) has enabled the icon on the tabs. The favicon shows up everywhere in Firefox. I have not seen this particular problem in the forums I have searched so far. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I've tried it all, but still not working in IE, but it does show up in the link on my favorites bar. It also works in FireFox, just not in the address bar on IE.
I've tried a single line of code as well as two lines of code.
The website is teapartygearonline.com (www as well, I didn't want to look like a spammer).
I've used favicons plenty of times in the past and all are working fine, just not this one.
Does anyone have any ideas?

user iconVlasta on July 13th 2010 0

Hm, it seems to send a wrong mime type as it displays as text in Firefox - I do not know if this is the real reason though...

Big white space at the top of the page... above "How to make a fav-icon?"

user iconAnonymous on September 17th 2010 0

You might want to mention that Firefox and Chrome will accept 32x32 .ico files as favicons. These look ALOT better than 16x16.

To do this so that IE shows the 16x16 file and firefox/chrome show the 32x32:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon2.ico" >
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >

Where favicon.ico is 16x16 and favicon2.ico is 32x32.

Firefox and chrome grab the first one and since IE can't show the first one, moves on to the second one.

This is the only way to order it as far as I could tell.

Also, FYI, it looks like chrome will actually show a 64x64 icon, but very few screens would be big enough to notice any difference. I can't tell if firefox will show a 64x64.

user iconVlasta on September 17th 2010 0

Well, there is a bit of misinformation in your post.

I definitely would not recommend placing two favicon links into your page html, there is no advantage. If you want to be hi-tech, you can place both 32x32 and 16x16 images into a single .ico file.

IE accepts larger icons just fine and actually uses them (unlike FF or Chrome) if you use higher DPI screen mode. If it appeared to you that 32x32 favicon looked better in FF or Chrome, your 16x16 favicon was probably not well designed.

user iconAnonymous on September 23rd 2010 0

its not showing....
i just put this <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico"> in header section

and favicon.ico is on root path...

I can get it to work on IE (of all things?) but it does not seem to work on Firefox. I did not even add any head tags. Can you possibly explain why it does not work on Firefox. Is a special link tag NECESSARY for the Firefox browser.

My site is not showing the favicon, please help ๐Ÿ˜ž

user iconAnonymous on November 12th 2010 0

It seems that CTRL F5 on page (full refresh - no cache) doesn't refresh favicons. If your icon wasn't valid first time you opened your the site from browser, this invalid icon gets cashed and doesn't refresh until you open it directly (full path to icon file) and then go with CTRL F5.
Hope it helps..

What a wonderful site. Think I'll be coming back. In the meantime I have a problem with a favicon.ico. I made one, uploaded it and everything was hunky dory but the icon itself was rubbish. So, I made another one to replace it. It's a whole lot slicker and works in F/fox; Opera; Chrome; Safari for windows. The problen is that no matter how many times I clear my cache, or "add to favorites" or "add to favorites bar", IE8 refuses to show anything other than it's own default icon.
The address is www.snapsphotoservices.biz
The icon is proven to be on site via www.snapsphotoservices.biz/favicon.ico
This issue has buggered up my whole day.
Any help greatly appreciated. By the way, the original rubbish favicon.ico DID work in IE8.
Cheers,
Gene Stevo.
IGNORE THE ABOVE. Noticed that win7 saw my favicon.ico as a jpeg. It appears not all online favicon generators are born equal. Just replace with a new one generated by RealWorld on line generator and it worked 1st time. Nice one.

user iconAnonymous on February 15th 2011 0

would this make a difference if i use a local root instead of a url link?
(eg.<link type="image/x-icon" rel="shortcut icon" href="file:///Users/mypc/Desktop/profile.html/favicon.ico"/> ) i tried so many times, but i still couldn't get the result.

user iconVlasta on February 15th 2011 0

Yes, it could. If you are thinking about using favicons, you should have a web server installed at least at your own computer.

I beg to differ with the statement that Firfox supports favicons flawlessly. I uploaded our own favicon.ico to the root folder to replace the web host's favicon that was placed there whey they first set up the site for us. Chrome and IE8 picked up the new favicon without a problem. Firefox 3.6.13 would not pick it up even after deleting browsing history, removing and recreating the bookmark, etc. Finally, I installed the Favicon Picker extension available from Mozilla and that did the trick.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/favicon-picker-3/

user iconAnonymous on February 25th 2011 0

Browsing to [yourdomain]/favicon.ico did force both IE8 and Firefox to load the image when dumping history and pressing Ctrl+F5 didn't work, and only Chrome was displaying the favicon. However, Firefox first asked me what program I wanted to use to open the image and I had to select Firefox. I also already had installed the Favicon Picker. Thanks for the tip, though! ๐Ÿ˜Š

your favicon is renamed .gif

user iconAnonymous on June 5th 2011 0

Still having problems with this. Tried several sites to create icon and uploaded to host but still no joy http://www.fixmyservices.co.uk

user iconVlasta on June 6th 2011 0

No serious error, but a couple of small ones on your site. You have the code in your header twice, the 24bit .ico format is not the best one and your server claims the mime type of the .ico file is text/plain.

user iconAnonymous on June 17th 2011 0

its working with chrome bt not other browsers

how to make favicon supported by mozilla

user iconAnonymous on September 5th 2011 0

hello

user iconAnonymous on September 6th 2011 0

The following tag worked for me: <link rel="shortcut icon" href=favicon.ico>. Put it after your title tag

user iconVlasta on September 6th 2011 0

No, use the code given on the page. You code is not correct HTML - it is missing double quotes around attribute value and proper tag closing mark.

user iconAnonymous on September 8th 2011 0

Was having trouble getting a favicon for a client to work so sourced out new code for the header and found yours - worked like a charm in Safari, Opera, Chrome - waiting to see if it works in Firefox and IE, but assuming I just have to wait. But wanted to say thanks! ๐Ÿ˜Š

user iconAnonymous on September 12th 2011 0

doesn't work, kinda a wast of time :/

user iconAnonymous on September 19th 2011 0

thank you for the informative tutorial. After clearing history' it worked like a charm...very appreciative ๐Ÿ˜Š

user iconAnonymous on September 26th 2011 0

its not working in google chrome

user iconAnonymous on October 1st 2011 0

Just copy the code and paste it in head tag.
But remember to link to your favicon were located.
Example, if you put your favicon with jpg format in a folder called "picture"
in public html, the code will be :

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="picture/your favicon name.jpg" />

.ico in above sample is the favicon file extention. It may be .jpg .gif .png etc.
Just try it.....

If you have had more knowledge about HTML,PHP,Javascript,etc, please tell me to

I still learning too.... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanx, put to http://onlineglobe.org but problem was cache in my case.

user iconAnonymous on January 11th 2012 0

This page was very helpful. Initially I tried clearing my cache in firefox to display our new favicon, but wasn't working. By actually going to the favicon.ico directly and refreshing the new icon finally appeared on the 3rd or 4th refresh.

Odd how seamless chrome handles this favicon change, while other browsers struggle. However not surprised about IE.

favicon shows on the website i build at home on the computer i built and uploaded it on (IE9) but at work on IE* it only shows the IE "E" as the favicon... deleted all histoy, cookies ect as advised and also added tofaviortes and favorites bar but nothing.

user iconAnonymous on February 14th 2012 0

I got it to show up on firefox, but not IE ฮ˜__ฮฆ

I'm using
<link rel="Icon" href="favicon.ico" />
in between the <head></head> tags.

I deleted history and form data, etc. I don't have this html file uploaded to the net, just a project on a local machine. Does that make much a difference? If so, what would I need to do to adjust to it?

user iconVlasta on February 14th 2012 0

You need to access the file via http protocol, not file protocol. So, probably yes, it makes difference. Also, use /favicon.ico instead of favicon.ico.

user iconAnonymous on April 5th 2012 0

works perfectly in explorer but won't load in firefox. However, favicon loads perfectly if I puts its url in the address bar and search for it in firefox. Deleted cache etc etc

Problem solved re: loading in explorer but not firefox. Simply create both a .ico file and a .gif file and load both files to the server. In my case explorer accepts the .ico and firefox accepts the .gif. No idea why, but it works and that's all that matters ๐Ÿ˜‰

and of course write the two lines into your source code.
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.gif" />

user iconAnonymous on April 7th 2012 0

It only works for firefox. ๐Ÿ˜ž

user iconAnonymous on April 22nd 2012 0

Thanks.......

user iconAnonymous on April 23rd 2012 0

I've tried all of the advice posted here but only see my new favicon in the url/location bar if I add it favicon, favicon.ico or favicon.gif to my doc root html path in the firefox browser: www.mydomain.com/favicon (and in chrome it doesn't show up in the url at all, only in the body of the page)

I have 2 different urls/sites/virtual hosts on my dev server, and the other favicon works well for the other domain. I don't want to use the same favicon for both domains though! Guess I should try another image and see if I get the same results...but if the favicon doesn't work due to the nature of the image, it wouldn't show up in the url/location bar at all...I wish my apache error log would tell me something!

user iconAnonymous on April 24th 2012 0

ok it was very slow, probably due to substandard hardware: the favicon showed up first in a subdirectory page, then on the home page, but it was an older favicon. The new one now appears in chrome (both pages) so it should renew itself in firefox soon...no wait, I had to clear the browser history, which is weird since I've set firefox to never remember history! Anyway, crisis averted, thanks.

Is there a way to add a favicon to all of your pages at once?

user iconVlasta on May 14th 2012 0

Only if you use some kind of content management system that allows you to modify parts of all your pages in one place. If you are using plain html files, you would need to change each page.

The <link> works if placed in the HEAD of the document. Make sure the ico file is located in the root, or next to the document. If not, specify the path. Also make sure the name is 'favicon.ico', or update the bit of code to reflect the proper name.

Side Not: Whoever commented above me, please note that this response was in no way to assist you. Do not call any developer an idiot. If you would have read through the entire guide, applied a bit of common sense, you would have had better luck!

Even after clearing the cache, I'm still not seeing the favicon I made. I'm using Chrome. Made a simple website in notepad++ to have my school's bell schedules show up as a webpage in Chrome. Using Dropbox to host both files (this is probably my problem). Here is the source for reference:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<title>2012-2013 Bell Schedules</title>
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />
<TITLE>CHS Bell Schedules</TITLE>
<STYLE TYPE="text/css">
<!--
@page { margin: 0.5in }
P { margin-bottom: 0.08in }
-->
</STYLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY LANG="en-US" DIR="LTR">
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0in"><IMG SRC="bell schedules 2012-2013.jpg" NAME="graphics1" ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=665 HEIGHT=843 BORDER=0><BR CLEAR=LEFT><BR>
</P>
</BODY>
</HTML>

Any thoughts?

am also trying to create favicon but still it does not show in my Google chrome and in my IE. what might be the problem

user iconAnonymous on October 4th 2012 0

Have created a favicon.ico, placed tags in head of html but now the icons only appear after you browse to the favicon.ico file on the server. e.g. If you browse to web site http://www.example.com/, favicon doesn't appear in browsers. If you now go to http://www.example.com/favicon.ico, the favicon appears as it is supposed to when browsing to web site initially.

user iconAnonymous on October 4th 2012 0

Hey favicon ico works online when the webserver is online in google...

if you do not see your icon change, it is because of cache or DNS. Add a period after domain.com (ie domain.com. ) in the address bar and it will show up. -- D0rk
